Ash Wednesday (Miercoles de Ceniza)

The first day of Lent is Ash Wednesday. On this special day of reflection, Catholics wear a marking of the cross in ash on their foreheads. The ashes symbolize our mortality. Ash Wednesday’s tradition is rooted in Jewish traditions in text found in the old testament: Genesis 3:19 -

"You are dust and to dust you shall return."

And, in other mentions in Job 42:6 and Daniel 9:3.

In La Ceja, Colombia Ash Wednesday  (Miercoles de Ceniza) is widely celebrated with almost everyone having a marking of the cross drawn from ashes on their forehead, including the photographer.
