Santa Marta
Along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, the Jewish community of Javura Shirat Hayam in Santa Marta is growing, made up primarily of New Jews of Colombia, many from the Caribbean region. Converts to Conservative Judaism, they represent the increasing interest in Judaism in Colombia.
The community gathers for Shabbat services and Torah study every Friday and Saturday, creating a strong connection to Jewish tradition. They receive guidance from Rabbi Juan Mejía, who has mentored many Colombians on their Jewish path.
One of the most striking aspects of this community is its use of Playa Mikveh, a beach they have used as a ritual bath, integrating their environment into their spiritual practice.
Despite being a newer community, Javura Shirat Hayam is a center of learning, faith, and cultural diversity, representing the growing presence of Judaism in Colombia and providing a welcoming space for those seeking a deeper Jewish life.
