Barranquilla (New)

Barranquilla's Jewish identity is expanding with the growth of a new community that seeks to recover its heritage. Led by Asher Edwing Gutierrez, this group is largely made up of Anusim, descendants of Jews forced to convert to Christianity during the Spanish Inquisition, who are now returning to Judaism. Unlike the older Jewish community, which arrived in the early 20th century from Europe and the Middle East, these new members are largely of Colombian descent. Although of more modest origins, their commitment to Jewish education, the study of Hebrew and religious practice has given them greater recognition. While they lack the historical institutions of the older community, they share many traditions, such as eating kosher foods. Barranquilla, a city of cultural intersections, is seeing the fusion of these two Jewish identities. As they get closer, they redefine Jewish life in the city.
