Barranquilla is home to two distinct but increasingly connected Jewish communities. The oldest Jewish community, established in the early 20th century, traces its roots to immigrants from Türkiye, Egypt, Poland, Syria and the former Ottoman Empire. These families built the city's first synagogue and school, creating a solid infrastructure that still defines Jewish life in Barranquilla. Under the leadership of Rabbi Ilan Sultanik, the ancient community has been historically more prosperous and maintains close ties to European traditions. Its imposing synagogue, similar to that of Envigado, reflects its deep-rooted presence in the city. Despite economic and social differences, both communities share practices such as Jewish education and the purchase of kosher meat in Antioquia. Figures such as Ernesto Cortissoz, co-founder of Avianca, highlight the Jewish influence in Barranquilla. As both communities evolve, they find more common ground, uniting faith and heritage in one diverse city.
