In 1976, Laurence Salzmann was invited to come to Israel to prepare his Romanian photographic essay for a show at the Beth Hatefutosth Museum. Working with its director Jesaya Weinberg and Isaco Gaon, the designer at the Israel of Museum, the three put together the exhibit that became known as The Last Jews of Rădăuţi. That work was to be shown later under guidance of Cornell Capa at the International Center of Photography in New York City and some 40 additional venues world-wide.

Laurence on arriving in Israel decided to spend the year he would live there in the city of Jerusalem. The history and diversity of the people there appealed to him. He found a place to live at 38 Hanavim Street, (street of the Prophets). Salzmann started to photograph people he encountered on the streets of Jerusalem.
